A group of Accountancy scholars were hailed as champions in the 8th International Conference of the Young Economists' Convention (YEC) under its UnionBank Policy-making Competition held Saturday at the Dela Salle University in Manila.
The scholars have competed in developing a policy paper under time pressure. The working topic was disclosed only in the afternoon of the first day of the convention, with the policy document submitted within three (3) hours and subsequently presented before a panel of judges.
The YEC policy-making contest is an avenue for students to practice their roles as future leaders and policy makers. It aims to raise awareness, enhance critical thinking, and foster active participation in light of the relevant events and issues affecting society today. Going beyond research, the competition aims to translate the classroom and convention lessons into practice that would fit the students in the shoes of our current policy makers.
The 8th International Conference, in partnership with the World Youth Alliance for Asia Pacific and the ASEAN Youth Leaders' Association, is the culminating event of the YEC series. It is a prime gathering of young and dynamic business and economics students around the world to explore and discuss relevant economic issues as they develop into future academe, industry, and government leaders. It provides an avenue for interaction and engagement among young movers and shakers who have the potential to shape the future with their ideas.
Accountancy and Economics dean Eloisa Macalinao said that the winning team has received certificates and a P 5,000 cash grant. With Prof. Rod Magat as adviser during the contest proper, the team is composed of Vennesse Roselle Asturias, Genesis Balbuena, April Bautista, Leo Paolo Cameña, Leo Paolo Gonzales and Anna Patricia Rivera.
PLM president Ma. Leonora Vasquez-de Jesus extended her congratulations, expressing that the team's feat in policy-making resonates well with PLM's main purpose of providing training in public affairs, as enshrined in the University Charter.
